Best-known as Glee's sharp-tongued Sue Sylvester, Jane Lynch's on-screen persona is someone that many love to hate. But when she's not prowling the corridors in Sue's shiny tracksuit, who is the real Jane Lynch and how did this Golden Globe and Emmy winner learn to channel such delicious nastiness?

This is no typical Hollywood memoir of torment, grief, regret and plastic surgery. It's a simple but candid story of how a girl from Chicago came to Hollywood, overcame her demons, and finally hit the big time. Taking a good, hard look at herself, Lynch reveals that she and Sue Sylvester actually aren't all that different. At times in her life she 'was a real pain in the ass'.

'I was an anxiety-stricken kid with a big, scary secret.' How difficult it is to imagine this funny, bright, intelligent woman hitting rock bottom, but she is frank about her self-loathing during those years and paints a vivid picture of drunken nights, angry tirades and a person with no friends. In short, she was a real-life Sue Sylvester.Yet this very same woman has starred in string of great, fun movies, including Talladega Nights, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Role Models and Julie and Julia, with actors such as Steve Carrell, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep. With her impeccable comic timing and quick wit, she has transformed what was originally a guest part on Glee into one of the programme's most central and defining characters, and has won several awards for doing so. Lynch relates the story of her comedy career in a voice that is modest, hilarious and endlessly entertaining, even though her own life hasn't always been such a laugh.

Happy Accidents (Audible Audio Edition) Jane Lynch HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books

I got the audio book of this and could NOT stop listening to it! It was so well-told in her voice and so interesting...

I know that actors are not the characters that they play, but, I would not have expected her to have such relate-able insecurities or to have had such a long road to get where she is today, but of course we're all glad she is ,because how can you not love Sue Sylvester, Charlie Harper's therapist or Calhoun from "Wreck it Ralph"? (Just as examples-- I pretty much adore Jane Lynch in anything she's in-- I haven't watched much "Glee" yet, but, the bit I have watched was mostly for her because she's hilarious.)

I don't want to give away too much of what happens within, clearly, but it's an absorbing and surprising read-- and I think one of the nicest surprises is her talking about how wonderful her parents were-- because how many famous people are able to do that? (So many talk about past abuses, was glad for that not to be here.)

Highly recommend.

Happy Accidents (Audible Audio Edition) Jane Lynch HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews

Jane Lynch's memoir is light fare, perfect for picking up as a relief from the stresses of daily life. The stories from her childhood in suburban Illinois, and about her parents, are the most fun. She's deferential in assessing her own talent, and while reading I couldn't help but think, "You got these roles (in a play, a film) not because of a happy accident but because you've got talent!" Therefore, her career probably isn't as serendipitous as she portrays it in the book.

Lynch isn't a sentimentalist but she's generous in her portrayals of the various characters that have entered and exited her life over the years. I found myself smiling, laughing and enjoying her company in this book. It reads like catching up with a friend you had in high school; chatty, intriguing, familiar in the best sense.
This is such an honest book. Jane tells it like it is from her childhood days, to her "bossyness" to her alcoholism, to her relationships. She invites us to listen to her story, which is so interesting, and she doesn't make it sound as if she's tooting her own horn.
I've watched her for years and years - and probably didn't even realize it. I saw "Lovespring International" every week and had forgotten Jane was in it! Of course her Christopher Guest movies are my favorite and she writes about how those movies came about, the moment she met Chris, her development ofher characters, the fun they all had together.
I felt good reading this book, but sad when it was over.
Jane Lynch is hilarious. She is just SO FUNNY. It's written in 1st person and the stories she shares are pretty great. What a trip. She's really learned a lot from her life and shares that wisdom with the reader. She's also got a lot of great photos to share of her experiences and people she has worked with; and the foreword is by Carol Burnett. AWESOME. Love Carol as well. Read it. I don't regret it. And the pacing is good so you could read through it in a couple of days if you have nothing else to do.
I have always loved Jane Lynch. Whenever we'd see her in a movie or a bit part in a TV show my boyfriend and I were always rooting for her. There is something so very authentic about her and it really comes through in this bio. I am so happy we got to have an insight into the inner workings of this very talented and wonderful human being. Mostly I am happy to see such a strong woman in Hollywood who busts through gender roles. Jane worked so hard to get to where she is now both personally and professionally happy. I am happy she shared her journey with me. I felt like I was right there with her listening over a soy latte. GOOD STUFF JANE. (Would also love to know where I can read the full script for "Oh Sister my sister" I laughed so hard my face turned bright red when I read the writing excerpt she put in the book from that show.)
This story was quick and so much fun to read. Jane Lynch is an inspiring woman...and so naturally funny. I was hooked right from the start as she tells about her childhood and her sister and parents. She tells of them affectionately, even if she is telling of a not so perfect conversation or event. I'd say the main focus of the book is just the series of 'happy accidents' that leads her to where she was in life when the book was written a few years. Its nice to watch her rise to fame and become comfortable with herself. It was bittersweet when she tells of her wedding though because the couple split in 2013. The small part towards the end about Glee was also tinged in sadness when she mentioned Cory Montieth because he since passed as well. The book is a bit outdated I guess now as everyone's lives can change in the blink of an eye. I guess this means its time for a new Jane Lynch memoir.
I really enjoyed this book for its honesty. Jane Lynch started out her career with a diva attitude and few friends and admits it bluntly. She learned some life lessons along the way thanks to growing maturity and a good counselor, ditched the drinking and found love. The bottom line is throughout it all, I BELIEVED her. There wasn't the feel of selective editing or conveniently never understanding other people's "attitudes" towards her that are in some celeb autobiographies (I'm looking at you Cybill Shepherd). Jane calls it as she sees it and admits it when she's been a bit of a beast. So when she finds joy and fulfillment with her wife, we can believe that too. And who doesn't love a happy ending? My only quibble is Jane clearly didn't do much cross-checking and so some dates do not add up. eg She talks about her one-woman show Oh Sister, My Sister leading to the opportunity of the film Best in Show, but the playbill for Oh Sister included in the book has Lynch listed as the star of Best in Show. She refers to kissing Shepherd in The L Word as her first on-screen gay kiss when Best in Show fans would still be laughing at that earlier famous gay snog. I know all our memories fade with age, but it just stood out that the book hadn't been finessed in editing as it might have been. Still, these are small things that can always be fixed in a reprint. In the end, it's a great read. And I love that there are so many fabulous photos of Jane at all ages.
